Maltese Association for the Study of Spirituality and Spiritual Companionship
Overview
The Maltese Association for the Study of Spirituality and Spiritual Companionship is an autonomous, voluntary, and non-profit association, registered under the Voluntary Organisations Act 2007 (Act No. 22 of 2007) by the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. The Association was entered in the Register of Voluntary Organisations in Malta (EU) on 30 November 2019 under the Identification Number VO/1821 under the principal purpose of Education and Research
Mission
Within a Christian perspective, the Association aims to encourage awareness, understanding, respect for and support of people’s spirituality, both in professional contexts as well as the wider community. This comes into effect by: promoting the critical study of all aspects of spirituality, education and dissemination regarding these matters; the development of inclusive and professional practices; and the fostering of adequate spaces for discussion about and aiding in spiritual companionship.
Objectives
The Association asserts its objectives as follows:
- Advance the further study of spirituality and spiritual accompaniment in its practice and professional discipline.
- Uphold the teaching and learning of spirituality as an academic and professional discipline.
- Support spiritual directors in their professional field through continuous professional development enticements and supervision.
- Foster dialogue about spirituality with different faiths and worldviews, professions and interest groups.
- Encourage and facilitate research in spirituality, through the development of talks, workshops and other academic events.

Recruitment
There are two levels of membership open to individuals in the Association
Full Membership
Full membership for those who have successfully completed the Master of Arts in Spirituality or the Master of Arts in Spiritual Companionship programmes at the University of Malta, or any equivalent Second Cycle Course (i.e., Master’s Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, or Postgraduate Diploma) specializing in Spirituality, Spiritual Theology, Spiritual Companionship, etc. at EQF Level 7 or higher. A subscription fee of €20 yearly is paid in advance
Student Membership
Student membership for those who are currently enrolled, in the following: the Master of Arts in Spirituality or the Master of Arts in Spiritual Companionship programmes at the University of Malta, or any equivalent Second Cycle Course (i.e., Master’s Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, or Postgraduate Diploma) specializing in Spirituality, Spiritual Theology, Spiritual Companionship, etc. at EQF Level 7 or higher. A subscription fee of €10 yearly is paid in advance.
In the case of Religious (i.e. consecrated) persons, membership is offered to them once a written consent is presented to the Executive Committee by their legitimate Religious Superior.
